Passage of the Week – June 21, 2009

June 21, 2009

Guard your steps as you go to the house of God and draw near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools; for they do not know they are doing evil. Do not be hasty in word or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few. For the dream comes through much effort and the voice of a fool through many words.

(Ecclesiastes 5:1-3 NASB)

The Bible has much to say about prayer and there is no shortage of guides and models for prayer in the Church today. One thing that seems to be lacking in many people’s prayer life is a sincere reverence for the holiness of God. We tend to approach God in a manner similar to that which we use in our normal human relations and we forget that this is the Lord of creation that we are addressing.

The Bible does encourage us to come to God. As Christians we need no mediation other than Christ and we can come boldly into the presence of Him (Heb. 4:15-16). Does this mean that God has become less than holy, less than awesome? By no means…

We must always remember that we are creatures and He is the creator. We come into His presence by His own grace and mercy without which we could not stand. We have many gifts through Christ but one of the greatest is the ability to approach the holy God in prayer and reverence. May we never take this for granted.
